Instrument-Making Workshops: Creating "Found Sound" Instruments

Workshop participants work in small cooperative groups to create an instrument from "found" items that would fit each category. The four major sound groupings for non-pitched percussion instruments are woods, ringing metals, shakers and membranes. Some examples in each area would be:

WOODS: sticks from the woods, dowel lengths cut in half and played together

RINGING METALS: African style bells created from aluminum fencing caps, metal trashcan played with a stick.

SHAKERS: small, easily held shakers created from plastic film canisters, soda cans with rice inside.

MEMBRANES: plastic buckets (upside down with sticks), 5-gallon plastic water jugs, coffee can or clay flower pot with a stretched piece of rubber (innertube or balloon) across the top.
