Diversity Drumming and Leadership Training

Mary Knysh has been working with diversity groups for several years, both in running rhythmic and drumming workshops that illustrate in sound the fundamentals of acceptance and appreciation of people's similarities and differences as well as working with non-verbal forms of communication and team building skills.

This program provides students with a positive outlet to deal with their personal traumas and day to day issues. The goal of this program is that students will pass their experiences on in a wide variety of community outreach projects including all ages from preschool students to senior citizens and all ages in between.

With Mary's guidance, the students develop a training guide designed to assist other secondary level diversity groups in this work.

Students will also use the skills learned throughout their training/practice sessions with Mary as they develop and lead rhythmic workshops at other schools in the region.

While it is difficult to describe the health benefits of community music making, the effects on people's mental state is very profound. These activities leave participants feeling both more aware of themselves and other group members. This work also provides them with a variety of life skills including: listening to one another; eye contact; nonverbal communication; teamwork; working towards a common goal; knowing when to review and possibly readjust; and learning to support one another.
